Overview and Context:

Transitional Statement: Dispositions. Attitudes. Behaviors. Abilities. Beliefs.

Let's remind ourselves again that we're that we're on a journey and we're going somewhere. Ruth Deakin Crick uses this image to illustrate what the learning power journey looks like. But before you read this excerpt from her scholarly article ("The Four Stations"), do look at the My Learning Journey graphic one more time. You may even want to read the whole article since those of us at Richland will be spending the next five years of our life together in this territory.

1. Where should we begin the journey toward knowledge, skills, and achievement for our students?

Begin with what students believe about their own intelligence and their ability to change.

Watch "The Power of Belief" - a TED video

www.youtube.com—watch

2. What is the relationship between the science of learnable intelligence and the work of Dr. Carol Dweck?

As neuroscience reveals the working of neurons and the plasticity of the brain our research reveals the importance of these concepts for student motivation and achievement. -- Carol Dweck

"In our work we have found that students belief about their mind and its plasticity are key."

3. How has the research of Carol Dweck come to dominate the field of learnable intelligence? And what are its implications both for students themselves and for the instructors who teach them?

www.journeytoexcellence.org.uk—rslearnableintelligence.asp

4. How can you review the large body of research conducted by Dr. Dweck along with other key figures in the field?

Spend time with the web site Mindset Works. www.mindsetworks.com

In particular...

Watch some interviews with Dr. Dweck. www.mindsetworks.com—dr-dweck-interviews.aspx

Spend 5 minutes assessing your own mindset. mindsetonline.com—step1.php Do you have mostly a fixed mindset or mostly a growth mindset? Can you develop your growth mindset so your students will have a greater chance of growing theirs? But don't think that a mindset is a solid block of wood. All of us will be drawn to a fixed mindset in certain areas and drawn to a growth mindset in others.

5. What article about brain plasticity does Dr. Dweck often use in her work with students?

6. Is there an free, online clickable presentation about how to grow your intelligence that you can use with your students (perhaps)?

The presentation. Fantastic. By Wesley Warner. prezi.com—grow-your-intelligence-2-you-can-grow-your-intelligence

A lesson plan. www.collegeincolorado.org—G7_Unit3_GYI.pdf

More downloadable resources from www.roadstosuccess.org. Requires registration. (problem on Aug 3, 2013)

NOTE to Becki: Developed by a commercial entity called Roads to Success. A resource worth investigating.   646-519-5050

7. Are there classroom resources on mindsets you can use with your students ?

Most definitely. Check out Classroom Strategies to Foster a Growth Mindset. www.mindsetworks.com—free-resources

8. Is there a single sheet infographic that shows where the logic of the two mindsets lead?

alumni.stanford.edu—dweck_2007_2.pdf

9. Has that same infographic been made into a video which can provide a interactive experience with students?

Fixed mindset vs Growth mindset.

To use this with students here's what we recommend:

Pass out the single sheet infographic.

View the 1 minute 5 second video all the way through -  for the power of its visual images and music.

Watch it a second time with your mouse on the pause button. Stop at each level and interact with students.

When you reach the end (and the bottom of the printed version) talk to them about what a deterministic view of the world is.

Ask them which world view they subscribe to.

Encourage those whose assessment showed a fixed mindset to consider the value of moving to a growth mindset (Even though it requires more hard work !)

10. What about animations that illustrate these ideas?

The Fixed Mindset Student

The Growth Mindset Student

11. And what about a short video on the effect of praise on mindsets?

Carol Dweck: The Effect of Praise on Mindsets
